Ferrari Challenge UK - Croft
Race 1 – Maiden Win For Clarke
Race 1:
Maiden win. Jamie Clarke (Stratstone Manchester) finally got his hands on a first place trophy after four successive second place finishes, all of which have been behind Jason Baker (Dick Lovett Swindon). This time, though, it was Jamie on the top step of the podium after another action-packed race.
Action. Spectators at Croft were treated to a fantastic race, with action throughout the field from lights-to-flag. Jason Baker and Jamie Clarke began to pull away and continued their season-long duel, with Jamie staying within a second of Baker for the majority of the race. It looked to be a repeat of the previous four races, until the pair caught back-markers. Jason Baker tangled with Stuart Willson (Graypaul Nottingham) down at Clervaux, leaving Baker facing the wrong way. After fighting back through the field, Baker eventually came home in fifth place. The podium was concluded by Josh Kirkwood-Jones (H.R. Owen London) in second and Henry Simmons (Maranello Sales) finishing on the podium for the first time in third.
Coppa Shell. Once again the Coppa Shell lived up to expectations. Jamie Thwaites (JCT600 Brooklands Leeds) drove a perfect race and converted his pole into a first win, producing yet another new winner in the unbelievably competitive Coppa Shell class. The field behind Thwaites produced constant position changes and thrilling battles from start to finish, entertaining spectators with excellent, close racing for the duration of the race. Richard Guy (Charles Hurst) came home in second place, with Gary Redman (Graypaul Nottingham) completing the podium in third.
After a thrilling Race 1 of the Ferrari Challenge UK championship on Saturday, Race 2 was unfortunately unable to live up to expectations following an incident at the beginning of the race on Sunday that led to the race being abandoned.
The stewards took the decision to abandon circuit action due to the length of time required to repair the barriers after an incident at the start of Race 2. Following a collision involving Toby Flannagan, Jon Wood and Henry Simmons, the stewards had no choice but to call off the meeting due to safety concerns. Fortunately, no one was injured and all three drivers were unhurt following the accident.
Following Jamie Clarke's victory in Race 1, the Championship standings are as follows:
Pirelli Ferrari formula classic. The Pirelli Ferrari formula classic series run by the Ferrari Owners' Club GB produced more great racing for spectators to enjoy. After a poor start from third on the grid, Wayne Marrs recovered brilliantly to take another victory. He was absent from the podium, though, because he had to jump straight from his Ferrari F355 Challenge car into his Ferrari 488 Challenge car ready for the first race. His wife filled in and took to the top step of the podium to receive his hat, trophy and champagne. Wayne Marrs took another victory in Race 2 on Sunday, with Race 3 cancelled due to the earlier incident during the start of the Ferrari Challenge UK Race 2, above.
The Ferrari Challenge UK returns to racing action at Silverstone on September 21 and 22.
