The Marmon automobile was built in Indianapolis by Nordyke & Marmon - a firm that had produced flour-milling machinery for over half a century before turning its attention to automobiles. Family scion Howard Marmon built their first car in 1902. It used an air-cooled V-2 motor, and following several evolutions, he settled on a straight-six configuration. The company's reputation grew quickly, built atop dependable and innovative vehicles. By 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 race was won by a Marmon 'Wasp' racer. One of the company's most celebrated creations was the rear-view mirror, which negated the need for a rear-facing engineer to spot the approaching competition.

The 339.6 cubic-inch overhead-valve inline 6-cylinder engine used a single Updraft Stromberg carburetor and developed 84 horsepower. Many of the engine components were made of aluminum. It was backed by a three-speed manual transmission and stopping power was provided by two-wheel mechanical (servo-assisted) drum brakes. Its monocoque steel frame was topped by all-aluminum bodywork, with the body and chassis built as nearly one component, essentially an early version of unibody construction. Even the foot pedals were placed to allow quick movement from throttle to brake to clutch. The lightweight design was favored by the automotive elite as well as the United States government, who commissioned several Marmon Model 34s for the European campaign in World War II. Among the accolades of the Model 34 were breaking Erwin 'Cannonball' Baker's 1916 record for driving 'from sea to shining sea.' It was among the fastest ever motorcars of its era and was used as the Pace Car in the 1920 Indianapolis 500. The 'bee-tailed' Model 34 two-passenger Speedster was driven by legendary Barney Oldfield, whose speed on the track of 80 mph was faster than most of the pack could handle. Certainly impressed by the car, Oldfield acquired the car following the race and drove it all over the United States, promoting one of his business ventures, Firestone's line of Oldfield tires.
