Alexander Winton was an immigrant from Scotland who, upon arriving in America, opened the Winton Bicycle Company. He had also worked on a steamship as an engineer. The Winton Motor Carriage Company of Cleveland, Ohio is credited with being the first company in the United States to sell a motor car. The vehicles were termed 'horseless carriages' and included gas lamps, padded seats, and rubber tires made by the Goodrich Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio. Winton is credited with more than 100 patents. This 1898 Winton Phaeton two-seat Stanhope has roots that go very deep within American culture. It is credited as being the first American-made automobile sold in the United States and offered in significant production numbers. There were just over 20 examples produced during 1898 with one of the customers being James Ward Packard who would go on to produce his own line of vehicles.
