1989 Studebaker Avanti II Coupe

The Studebaker Avanti was the creation of the famous French industrial designer Raymond Loewy and his design team. The Avanti's sleek, sporty look and smooth handling brought lots of attention to the struggling Studebaker Corporation in 1962, and production was formalized. The original design team was sequestered in a house in Palm Springs, California, on March 19, 1961, and produced the accepted model in 30 days. The Avanti automobile was supposed to save the Studebaker Corporation from financial collapse. Production problems occurred, and most customer advance orders were canceled as buyers gravitated to the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang. In 1966, former Studebaker dealers Newman & Altman purchased all the Avanti assets, and the Avanti II was born. The last model of the original design was the 1991. By then, the company had been moved from the original South Bend, Indiana, factory to Youngstown, Ohio. Others have since tried to revive the marque, but they have been unsuccessful.
