Andretti Rallycross Fights To The Finish At 2019 ARX Season Opener
•Tanner Foust sits second in provisional championship standings
•Cabot Bigham starts rookie ARX season for Andretti
Herndon — The Andretti Rallycross team fought hard this weekend, with veteran driver Tanner Foust earning second- place in the provisional championship standings after the first round of the 2019 Americas Rallycross (ARX) Championship at the historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Both he and teammate Cabot Bigham raced Volkswagen Beetle supercars entered under the Andretti Rallycross banner, with support from Volkswagen R, Volkswagen's performance division.
Foust fought hard in his No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle Rallycross, scoring top-three finishes in each of the weekend's four qualifying rounds. The three-time rallycross champion finished first in a drama-filled Q2 race, where a touch before the first turn sent him spinning, and took the top qualifier position after winning the Q4. After taking second in the semi-final, Foust fell to fourth place in the final. Despite a mid-pack finish for the race, Foust sits second in the championship standings.
Teammate Cabot Bigham had a more challenging weekend in his rookie season in ARX Supercars. Day one saw the young driver finish seventh and fifth, and he reversed that on day two, finishing fifth and seventh. Taking last place in the semi-final, he did not advance to the final.
'I'm pretty gutted to not make the Final. It was a result of shaking the rust off from that long off-season outside of the car. The car was fast all weekend and deserved to be in the Final, especially on the podium. I am already looking forward to Gateway and eliminating a lot of the mistakes that I made in the qualifying heats. As a result we should have better starting positions for the Semi-Finals and hopefully never get eliminated from these Finals for the rest of the season.'
The second season of ARX racing continues July 13-14 at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, IL. The Andretti Rallycross drivers currently sit second and seventh in the provisional championship standings.
'There's serious competition between all teams and manufacturers,' said Tanner Foust. 'Everybody is right there, or quicker, and it is going to be a heated battle all year long.'

'It was a topsy-turvy weekend. We had some high moments—I had a great moment in Q4 and made a fun pass on the Subarus. The competition is strong and the track did not lead itself to clean first corner racing. We had a great start in the Final following Scott Speed into the first corner. Chris Atkinson was in there and got turned and then the whole train came. Unfortunately, I got pushed and stuck on his door, fell back to last but came back to finish fourth. I still think that the VWs are the way to go and the cars to beat. There's no doubt that the rest of the cars in the lineup have picked up the pace. It is going to be an incredibly tight season.'
Coverage of the Mid-Ohio round will air on CBS Sports Wednesday, June 12 at 9:00 PM (ET).
