As many as fifty examples of the SE010 sports prototype were completed and they would enjoy a long and distinguished motor racing career. The first 25 examples of the 2000 Sport Spider were built to satisfy the FIA homologation requirements for the Group 4 category, into which the design was accepted on April 1, 1969.
During the overall production run, both four-valve per cylinder and two-valve per cylinder heads were used, with the 8-valve units being the preferred setup for hill-climb use. The 16-valve alternative appeared to be the preferred configuration for circuit racing.
They had a sloping wedge-shaped nose with twin nose-mounted water and oil radiators. The body was made from lightweight detachable glassfibre with a goldfish-bowl windscreen. In the front were twin headlights on each side which helped earn it the nickname 'Quattro Fari' or four-headlight.
