1910 Benz 22/80 Prinz Heinrich

1910 Benz 22/80 Prinz Heinrich 1910 Benz 22/80 Prinz Heinrich 1910 Benz 22/80 Prinz Heinrich This is the second of the surviving Benz 21/80 hp Prinz Heinrich cars from the 10 built by Benz for the 1910 rally. The first Prinz Heinrich Tour in 1908 started on June 9 in Berlin and covered just over 2,000 kilometers (about 1,250 miles) finishing in Frankfurt on June 17 - an amazing feat of endurance on the unmade roads of northern Germany. In the 1910 race, this car was driven by Fritz Erle, winner of the original race in 1908. The event was only open to production touring cars with four seats and two or even three passengers, and no specially built race cars were allowed. After the race, the car was sold to a Mr. Craig in England, and he kept it for many years before selling it to automotive historian David Scott-Moncrieff in 1940. This Prinz Heinrich has recently been restored by the Louwman Museum to its original 'tulip'-bodied specifications, exactly as it appeared in the 1910 race. The trophy for the winner was a model car made of solid silver that weighed 13.5 kilograms (29 pounds).
