The Cadillac family had several memorable names throughout the years including the Brougham, Fleetwood, and DeVille, however the most enduring and successful name to ever carry the Cadillac badge would have to be the Eldorado. Named after the mythical lost city of gold, the Eldorado title carried Cadillac through ten generations of great cars that were at the very pinnacle of style and design in the American automobile.

The Eldorado name first appeared in 1953. It was an expensive car that was low, long, and flamboyant. With each generation of the Eldorado, they seemed to grow longer and lower. As Cadillac entered the 1960s, the Eldorado was still a large car with opulent décor and an impressive ride. The sixth generation built for 1965 and 1966 had an immense 129.5-inch wheelbase and a 429 cubic-inch V8 engine. The engine was common to all 1966 Cadillacs and had overhead valves, hydraulic valve lifters, a Carter four-barrel carburetor, five main bearings, and delivered 340 horsepower at 4,600 RPM and was backed by an automatic transmission.

In regards to overall sales, 1966 was a monumental year for Cadillac as it enjoyed its best sales year ever with over 200,000 examples sold.
