BRENTWOOD, Essex, 27 March 2019 – Ford is taking its Driving Skills For Life (DSFL) programme back to its roots as it returns to its original UK location at the intu Trafford Centre, Manchester.

Young or newly qualified drivers take part in free, hands-on training sessions designed to help develop their skills by simulating important real-world situations that can lead to accidents. Training elements include speed awareness, distracted driving, vehicle handling, the simulated effects of drugs and alcohol, and, for the first time in the programme's history, sleep.

New for DSFL in 2019 is the simulated sleep suit, which shows young drivers just how impairing drowsy driving can be. Studies have shown that fatigue is a major factor in up to 1 in 5 road crashes, and remaining awake for more than 18 hours can impair driving abilities to a degree that is comparable to exceeding the drink driving limit.

'After six years of successful DSFL programmes across the UK, we are delighted to be returning to Manchester for 2019,' said Andy Barratt, managing director, Ford of Britain. 'We have educated thousands of young drivers through our projects, and are proud to play a role in keeping new motorists safe on the roads. This year's programme promises to be more comprehensive than ever, thanks to the addition of our Share The Road scheme.'

Now in its seventh year in the UK, last year's events in Colchester and Nottingham saw record attendance for the programme. Established in 2003 by the Ford Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, Ford DSFL has provided free comprehensive advanced driver training to more than half a million young drivers globally.
